Azure Container Service now available to companies for free

Microsoft’s Azure Container Service supports DC / OS and Docker Swarm orchestration technologies. Both are open source. The move is said to make it easier for Microsoft to move workloads across multiple clouds or own servers. To underline its commitment to the field, Microsoft also joins the DC / OS Open Source Project.

Microsoft now provides the cloud service Azure Container Service (ACS) for free. It can be used to create and manage clusters of virtual machines. It also makes it easier to control containerized applications, making it easier to aggregate and control isolated applications, along with all drivers and files. It also ensures that containers do not inadvertently access the resources of others.

Interested parties can already create a free user account and view the price list . The use of the service accounts for Microsoft from minute to minute. In addition, the number of processor cores used, the memory provided, and the size of the volumes are included in the calculation.

The Microsoft Azure Container Service is based on Docker and Apache Mesos and supports common orchestration methods such as Mesosphere’s DC / OS (Data Center Operating System) and Docker Swarm. “You can set up your container-based applications in just a few clicks in a framework that helps you manage the complexity of large-scale used containers,” said Ross Gardler , senior program manager at Microsoft, as part of the announcement.

According to the Microsoft Manager, using open source technologies in the orchestration layer ensures that applications are portable across each cloud and server. “Unlike other container services, Azure Container Service is 100 percent dedicated to open source software,” says Gardler.

Together with Docker Swarm, Azure Container Service also allows you to use any Docker compatible tool. Docker Swarm is easy to use for customers familiar with Docker’s Universal Control Plane. In addition, Microsoft promises support for features such as Docker CLI for command-line cluster access and the Docker Remote API.

With DC / OS , virtualized or non-virtualized data centers could be managed as if they were one big machine. They are pooled into a flexible resource pool that all applications access. Lauit Microsoft’s AC / DC version of ACS provides “high availability” and allows you to organize containers and related components into “pods” that can be managed as a single entity.

The importance of technology for the Azure Container Service underscores Microsoft’s move to join the DC / OS Open Source Project . It then works there with companies like Accenture, Cisco and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, who have been involved for some time. Since the summer of 2015, Microsoft is also a member of the Open Container Project of the Linux Foundation . This is to ensure that users do not have to worry about binding themselves to a vendor with a given technology or a cloud provider and ensuring that “Docker’s initial commitments – portability, interoperability, mobility – are not lost . ”

Red Hat, the container platform Atomic Enterprise had in a public preview in November presented . This enables the use of Linux containers in Docker format to create microservices-based applications and to modernize traditional applications based on Red Hat Enterprise. For orchestration and cluster services, Red Hat relies on Kubernetes capabilities. Networking and storage plug-ins are provided by Red hat with Open vSwitch.

Rackspace also had in autumn 2015 with a Carina cluster service presented that uses the Docker Engine, native container and tools for orchestration Docker Swarm. He should get along without hypervisor and thus need less resources. The rackspace approach Technology is thus comparable with the container solution Triton from Joyent . Here, too, the technology provides for an isolation layer between the containers and allows them to be flexibly shifted without a virtualization layer.
